Ambelim SC retained their GFA Futsal League title in dominant fashion, thrashing Ponda Footballers 9-1 in the final at the Manohar Parrikar Indoor Stadium in Navelim on Tuesday. With the emphatic victory, Ambelim secured their place at the National Futsal Championship for the second consecutive year.
Fredsan Marshall led the charge with a brace, while Crosley Luis, Ronaldo Pereira, Velon Rebello, and Lyndon Cardoso also found the net in a ruthless attacking display. Michael Silva and goalkeeper Ozen Silva added their names to the scoresheet, further compounding Ponda’s woes. A late own goal by Relino Carvalho sealed Ponda’s fate, though Kiefer Dias salvaged a consolation goal.
“This is the third year we’ve reached the final, and for the second consecutive year, we are the champions,” said Ambelim SC president Benjamin Silva. “Once again, we will be representing Goa at the Nationals.”
Ambelim SC, traditionally a football powerhouse, has quickly established itself as a force in futsal. Their relentless pressing and clinical finishing overwhelmed Ponda Footballers, who struggled to contain their opponents from the outset.
Reflecting on the club’s growth, Silva acknowledged the progress in infrastructure and coaching, crediting former players for guiding the next generation. “Football is in our blood. Back in our day, we played on paddy fields with no proper infrastructure. Now, we have access to good grounds, and playing in an indoor stadium is a huge step forward,” he said.
Silva also urged parents to encourage children to take up sports. “Fitness is essential. If you have good health, you have everything,” he added.
With their place at the Nationals confirmed, Ambelim SC aims to build on last year’s semi-final finish and push for greater success on the national stage.
