Goa Football Association's aim is to ensure that Goa stays as the powerhouse of Indian football. We aim to be a model state for football development in the country and to ensure principles of fair play and equal opportunity for all irrespective of caste, creed and religion.

Goa's Football Legacy

Founding and Early Leagues

The Goa Football Association (GFA) was established in 1959, marking the beginning of a remarkable football journey in the state of Goa. The federation conducted its inaugural Goan State League in the same year, initially known as the Goa First Division. Clube Independente de Margao emerged as the champions, setting the stage for competitive football in Goa.

In 1969, the GFA introduced the Goa Senior League, intended to be the new first division in Goa. However, the league was later disbanded. Undeterred, the GFA restructured the league system for the 1970-71 season, dividing it into two divisions: the North Division and the South Division. This move aimed to enhance competition and provide more opportunities for teams across the state. Subsequently, the GFA introduced the Second Division and Third Division in 1971-72, further expanding the football landscape in Goa.

Goa Super Division and Professionalization

In 1977, the GFA launched the prestigious Goa Super Division, a league that brought together the best teams in Goa to compete for the coveted championship title. Salgaocar S.C. emerged as the inaugural champions of the Goa Super Division, solidifying their place in Goan football history.

As football continued to evolve globally, the GFA recognized the need to propel the game to a higher level within the state. Goa emerged as the first state in India to embrace professional football. In 1997, the GFA revamped the National State League, introducing the Goa Professional League. This transformation marked a significant milestone in Goan football, with Salgaocar once again emerging as the champions of the inaugural professional league season.

The Goa Professional League

The Goa Professional League witnessed a continuous growth and evolution over the years. From the 2000-01 season, the GFA expanded the league to include six teams, increasing the competitiveness and raising the standard of football in the state. In 2002, the league expanded further to an eight-team format, with clubs competing in home-and-away fixtures, resulting in a total of 14 matches for each club.

Recognizing the importance of adapting to the changing football landscape, the GFA announced a new format for the 2011 season, featuring 10 teams. This format aimed to provide more opportunities for clubs and players, fostering a highly competitive environment for football in Goa.

The Goa Professional League has become a premier platform for football talent to showcase their skills and compete at a high level. The league continues to captivate fans and inspire young players, serving as a breeding ground for future stars of Goan and Indian football.

Through its legacy and commitment to excellence, the GFA's football leagues have not only provided thrilling spectacles but also played a crucial role in elevating the standard of football in Goa. The Goa Super Division and the Goa Professional League have shaped the football landscape, creating a strong foundation for the sport's continued growth and success in the state.
